Do you reach for a bottle of hand sanitizer or you choose the conventional hand washing option when thinking to disinfect your hands? It is said that one must wash their hands at least six-seven times a day. Seem like a lot, isn’t it? But think about your day to day activities that how often you use the bathroom, prepare food, eat, sneeze, cough, touch unhygienic things, etc. Hygiene and sanitization goes a long way towards preventing illness. Besides, this can reduce the risk of communicable diseases by up to 59%. In the present situation where water is so scarce, can you imagine how you can keep your hands clean? One of the most common solutions is to reach for the hand sanitizer. But how effective is it and does it need to contain alcohol? Let’s find out! Twitter, Facebook and various other social networking platforms, there seem to be a lot of strong options when it comes to the best hand hygiene method. Some of you guys say that washing your hands is better and others vouch for sanitizer, because nobody washes their hands properly.
According to several types of research, you will learn that alcohol-based sanitizers may not offer complete protection against harmful germs and good old-fashioned soap and water is still the best way to keep your hands clean. However, the FDA recommends a concentration of 60-95% ethanol or isopropanol (kinds of alcohol) when used in a healthcare environment. “The ethanol-containing hand disinfectants were significantly more effective than hand washing with water or with soap and water for removal of detectable rhinovirus for the hands in this study,” the researchers said. Furthermore, a formula containing organic acids and ethanol resulted in a residual activity that significantly reduced virus recovery from the hands and rhinovirus infection for up to four hours after application.” So, which method is really better and why? First of all, not all hand sanitizers are equal. You will come across a wide range of hand sanitizer starting from gels to foams, alcohol-based, all-natural, ones that smell like pumpkin spice, etc. Which also means that the type of sanitizer you choose really matters- or rather, the active ingredient and its concentration. Choosing one that comprises of around 62–70% ethyl alcohol, means you will find some of the most popular brands here. When it comes to the alcohol-free stuff with ~natural active ingredients~ like aloe vera, chances are there that they might kill some germs but definitely not enough. For sanitizer to be effective, it must reduce a certain amount of microbes from a surface. So it doesn't really matter which brand of hand sanitizer you use or whether it's gel or foam, as long as it has at least 60% alcohol. And you should use enough hand sanitizer so that your hands get wet and it takes about 15 to 20 seconds for them to dry. Alcohol-based are effective at killing most stuff but not all Hand sanitizer is an effective product but alcohol ones aren’t successful in killing everything. Germs are everywhere and you'll get exposed to them no matter what you do. Unfortunately, they just don’t get killed by the alcohol compounds in sanitizer like other germs do. So, if you have any visible dirt or grime or sticky stuff on your hands, the sanitizer probably won't remove it, which is not ideal. So washing your hands with soap and water is the best hygiene method but make sure it lasts for at least 20 seconds This is it! Proper hand washing is the standard rule. Now why it is better than hand sanitizer you may ask? Well both of them are pretty good at reducing germs but washing actually does kill germs. In addition to this, it also removes much dirt, debris, and spores that could make you sick. Remember it’s not the soap that kills the germs — but the friction of lathering and washing away the organisms that make hand washing more effective. Steps to follow:
Hand sanitizer is still a good option There is a reason why hand sanitizers have made their way into healthcare environment- it is because they are pretty quick, easy, and effective if hand washing isn't an option at that moment. All you need to consider a reputable company that provides high-quality Heavy duty hand cleaner online that are great to use where you'd pick up germs.
